Errata slip affixed to blank margin of final page. In the end, an appeal to resuscitate the state's educational systems that had been "destroyed" by the war. Clingman (1812-1897), a native of Yadkin Conty, served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1843-1845 and 1847-1858, and the U.S. Senate, 1858-1861, and commanded a brigade of North Carolina regiments during the Civil War.
