Slapstick, or Lonesome No More! [Franklin Library].

Franklin Center: The Franklin Library, 1976. Published for members of the First Edition Society. Illustrated by Robert Andrew Parker. Along with Player Piano, which envisions society when machines do almost all the work, Slapstick is one of Vonnegut's more prescient novels. In this case, he imagines a president who campaigns on the slogan "Lonesome No More" and offers a baroque plan to end the social isolation afflicting many Americans. Vonnegut also imagines a Chinese scientific advance that accidentally becomes a plague. According to Currey (Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors), the Franklin Library edition, which was supposed to precede the trade edition, actually came out a month after. First Franklin library edition. A fine copy, signed by Vonnegut with a unique inscription and a hand-drawn self-portrait. Uncommon signed. Item #101793
