1834 Savannah GEORGIA Letter to Nathan AMES Requesting Artillery Swords, WEAPONS

1834. Autograph Letter Signed "M. M. Clark Lt & Asst Qr Master U.S.A.," Savannah, Georgia, May 19, 1834, one page, quarto, reading, in part: "...Will you be so good as to send each of us an Artillery sword of the new pattern. The amount will be forwarded as soon as they are received...You will please send them in the same box a sword for Lt. John Mackay...."

The swords requested from Ames would have been the well-known Model 1832 artillery swords, which were derived from the ancient Roman gladius. These popular weapons would be copied by the Confederacy some 30 years later.

CONDITION: Overall age toning; some separation at the folds; very good condition. Item #100514
