Founded in 1851, the Southern Military Academy operated in Fredonia, Chambers County, Alabama, until "closed by the civil strife of the 1860s." By special act of the Alabama legislature, a bill was passed in 1854 providing for a lottery to be held to raise funds for the school. It was a rousing success, as all of the tickets were sold and $60,000 in prize money was distributed, leaving $25,000 for the school. Item #100395
