THE HISTORY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, FROM ITS FIRST SETTLEMENT IN 1670, TO THE YEAR 1808
Charleston, South Carolina: David Longworth, 1809. Two volumes. xii,478; iv, 602pp. plus BOTH folding maps. The larger State Map of South Carolina is often lacking from the front of Volume One. Professionally rebound in embossed/tooled full leather boards with new endpapers and bright gilt title on leather six-part spine. Scattered minor toning/foxing. Part of original pastedowns affixed with previous owner, John Leech, 1816 in a nice hand in both. Text blocks are clean and in good condition. A beautiful shelf presence with this set and binding.
A standard work, by the prolific historian and native son. This copy is uncommon in that it has BOTH maps in remarkable condition! The better part of the book is devoted to the southern campaigns of the Revolution, and to biographies of prominent early Carolinians. The Streeter sale catalogue notes that the second volume "as a survey of life in contemporary South Carolina is of great value." HOWES R34, "aa." SABIN 67686. STREETER SALE 1139.
A truly beautiful COMPLETE copy of this scarce work. Not Ex-Lib. Item #100148
