Alexander Hewatt (Hewat) (1739-1824) was a Scottish-born Presbyterian minister who presided in a Charleston, South Carolina church from 1763 to 1777, when his property was seized and he was expelled for being a loyalist. Considered the earliest and best account of Colonial South Carolina and Georgia. His book remains important to this day because it is based on his own observations, a first-hand source, as well as his research. He discussed the immigration of British, French and other European migrants because of religious persecution and the lives and economy they created in the Carolinas. He described in detail the customs and lives of Native Americans of the region. He also deals with the introduction of African slaves and the institution of slavery which he opposed. Howes H452 ("Earliest history of this region."); Sabin 31630. Item #100104
