A View of South-Carolina, as Respects her Natural and Civil Concerns

Charleston, South Carolina: Printed by W.P. Young, no. 41, Broad-Street, 1802. [4], 252, [2] p., [8] leaves of plates (7 folded) : ill., maps. Professionally rebound with leather spine and new spine labels with gilt title. Large folding map in front laid in (not bound in). Front map

Preface, errata and a list of plates on page [4] (preliminary sequence). "Postscript" (page [253]-[254]) followed by a folded map (A plan of the entrance into Winyaw Bay at George Town, shewing where a short canal may be cut across North Island ...) not shown on the list of plates on page [4].

FIRST EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 500 PRINTED. Drayton was Governor of South Carolina and wrote this work shortly after he left office. In addition to the general map, the engravings include a fine view of the State House at Columbia by James Akin, a large folding plate depicting a rice winnowing machine, and a folding plan showing Winyah Bay and Georgetown that was added as a postscript as it did not appear in time for the regular print run. Streeter considers this work authoritative and it is certainly a fine early Charleston imprint. Howes D492; Sabin 20915; Streeter sale 1137; Turnbull I, p 391. Item #100043

Price: $12,500.00
