1831-1841. Signed. Contemporary sammelband of UNC and other North Carolina pamphlets, by the landowner, railroad promoter, and representative of Lincoln County, N.C. in the state legislature. He writes on the pastedown, "when I left college-Chapel Hill- in 1841, I had these addresses, catalogues, &c. Bound by Turner & Hughes" of New York. He also writes on an Address delivered at East Tennessee College that "I was a student at this college-6 months- & boarded with Mrs Craighead- the sister in law of Dr. Ramsey the author of the history of [??] & who is a relative of Alexander & [??] family, of Maclenburg-1879-V. A. McBee." A significant glimpse into the early life of this prominent Lincoln, N.C. resident. Twenty two individual pamphlets and four duplicates, by various printers, mostly from Raleigh, North Carolina, from 1831 to 1841. With a charter of the Louisville, Cincinnati & Charleston Rail Road Company for which his father, Vardry McBee, the founder of Charleston, S.C., briefly served as president; ten addresses to the students of UNC during his time there; five UNC catalogues of societies, faculty, and students, from 1838, 1839, and 1840; two pieces of North Carolina legislature; and a House of Representatives 'Report on Texas,' signed repeatedly by a Francis W. Lea, perhaps the same who would serve as agent for the Potawatomi Indians a decade later. Tear to the top edge near the gutter of a few pages of "A Lecture on the Subject of Common Schools," affecting the text but without loss. Loss to the fore edge of pp. 5/6 of "Thoughts on the Spirit of Improvement," with loss to the text. Trimming to the fore edge of the "Message from the President of the United States," affecting the text. Scattered writing by the previous owner in pencil. Creasing and surface tears to the leather binding along the spine and joints, with a vertical crack to the spine; loss to the binding at the head of the spine and at the edges of the rear board; spine and front joint patched by a conservator using Japanese tissue; rear board covered by later blue paper. Contemporary half leather over marbled paper.
