Hardcover in marbled boards with amateur black duct tape spine. Front board is detached. Text uniformly foxed and lightly browned, with a more foxing towards the last section of the book. Howes J-156 aa. Volume One includes two battle plans, that of the Battle of Germantown and the Battle of Cowpens. Ex-Lib. with usual markings, primarily a rubber-stamp on title page. Hand drawn pencil sketch of an eagle on ffep. IMO, needs to be rebound.

William Johnson was an associate justice of the US Supreme Court and served as a jurist and legislator in South Carolina and was influential in establishing the University of South Carolina. Johnson was appointed by Jefferson and was often as loggerheads with the Federalist dominated court of John Marshall. His father had served with Greene in the revolution. His biography of Greene was the first to be written and utilized Greene's personal papers. Sabin 36344. Item #100314
